What is True Freedom?

True freedom is the liberating power of Jesus Christ from sin. It liberates us from doing sin, frees us from the chains of sin that have been done to us and the sin that is around us in this fallen world.

Paul specifically is thinking about the power of sin and legalism that was endangering the churches in the region of Galatia. Whether legalism or antinomianism, the only true freedom is being internally free by the power of Jesus.

This freedom gives us the self-control to self-govern ourselves. This week our country celebrates our “liberation” from the tyranny of the English Empire.

We chose to be a nation that self-governs itself through electing leaders to represent us in governing our republic. We also began this new country of ours with the value of trusting God.

On our currency it states, “In God we trust”. Our founders believed that only with the faith and trust in God can a nation stay “free” in the sense that its citizens would have the self-governance to resist tyranny.

Many of us sense that as we increase in our secular direction as a country that we are in danger of losing our ability to self-govern.

My main focus as a citizen of both the kingdom of God and this great country is to make as many and better disciples of Jesus as possible.

The result will be both better citizens of the Kingdom of God and this country. I can’t control what the powers that be do in this world.

I can vote and have some influence, but my main task is doing the work of the Kingdom of God. I do believe that if all of the “self-identifying” Christians in our country were dedicated disciples of Jesus,

our country would be freer and a much healthier place to live in. Celebrate July Fourth, but pray for true liberation in Jesus.
